อนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิ เป็นอนุสาวรีย์ใน กรุงเทพมหานคร โดยรอบเป็นวงเวียน อยู่กึ่งกลางระหว่างถนนพหลโยธิน ถนนพญาไท และถนนราชวิถีตั้งอยู่ที่ กิโลเมตรที่ 0.0 ถนนพหลโยธิน ความสำคัญของอนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิคือเป็นอนุสรณ์สถานที่สำคัญและเป็นที่จารึกรายนามทหารที่เสียชีวิตใน กรณีพิพาทระหว่างไทยกับฝรั่งเศส (สงครามอินโดจีน สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 และ สงครามเกาหลี อีกทั้งยังเป็นต้นทางของถนนพหลโยธิน รวมไปถึงศูนย์กลางการคมนาคมที่มีรถโดยสารให้บริการในหลายเส้นทาง

ประวัติ

อนุสาวรีย์ชัยสมรภูมิ สร้างขึ้นเพื่อเทิดทูนวีรกรรมของทหาร ตำรวจและพลเรือนที่เสียชีวิตไปในกรณีพิพาทระหว่างไทยกับฝรั่งเศส เรื่องการปรับปรุงพรมแดนไทยกับอินโดจีนใหม่ ซึ่งในครั้งนั้นมีผู้เสียชีวิต 59 คน พลเอกพระยาพหลพยุหเสนาเป็นผู้วางศิลาฤกษ์เมื่อวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน 2484 และจอมพล ป.พิบูลย์สงคราม เป็นผู้กระทำพิธีเปิดเมื่อวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน 2485 สถาปนิกผู้ออกแบบอนุสาวรีย์คือ หม่อมหลวงปุม มาลากุลก่อนที่จะมีการสร้างวงเวียนอนุสาวรีย์ บริเวณจุดตัดของถนนพญาไท ถนนราชวิถี และถนนพหลโยธิน นี้มีชื่อเรียกว่า "สี่แยกสนามเป้า"

ความหมาย

การออกแบบอนุสาวรีย์ของหม่อมหลวงปุ่ม มาลากุล มีแรงบันดาลใจห้าประการ คือ
• ปฏิบัติการของกองทัพทั้ง 4
• ปฏิบัติการอย่างกล้าหาญของกำลังพลโดยเฉพาะ
• อาวุธที่ทหารใช้สู้รบ
• เหตุการณ์ที่สำคัญที่ต้องเปิดการสู้รบ
• ความสนใจของประชาชน
หม่อมหลวงปุ่มใช้ดาบปลายปืน ซึ่งเป็นอาวุธประจำกายทหาร โดยใช้ดาบปลายปืนห้าเล่มรวมกัน จัดตั้งเป็นกลีบแบบลูกมะเฟือง ปลายดาบชี้ขึ้นบน ส่วนคมของดาบหันออก ก่อสร้างด้วยคอนกรีตเสริมเหล็กประดับหินอ่อน มีความสูงประมาณ 50 เมตร ดาบปลายปืนส่วนด้ามตั้งเหนือเพดานห้องโถงใหญ่ ซึ่งใช้เก็บกระสุนปืนใหญ่บรรจุอัฐิทหารที่เสียชีวิตในกรณีพิพาทไทย-ฝรั่งเศส
ด้านนอกตอนโคนดาบปลายปืน มีรูปปั้นหล่อทองแดง ขนาดสองเท่าคนธรรมดา ของนักรบ 5 เหล่า คือ ทหารบก ทหารเรือ ทหารอากาศ ตำรวจ และพลเรือน ศิลปินผู้ปั้นรูปเหล่านี้เป็นลูกศิษย์ของ ศาสตราจารย์ศิลป พีระศรี เช่น สิธิเดช แสงหิรัญ, อนุจิตร แสงเดือน,พิมาน มูลประกอบ,แช่ม ขาวมีชื่อ ภายใต้การควบคุมของ ศ.ศิลป พีระศรี

ด้านนอกของผนังห้องโถง เป็นแผ่นทองแดงจารึกนามผู้เสียชีวิต รายนามผู้ที่ได้รับการจารึกไว้ มีทั้งสิ้น 160 คน เป็นทหารบก 94 คน ทหารเรือ 41 คน ทหารอากาศ 13 คน และตำรวจสนาม 12 คน จนถึงปัจจุบันแผ่นทองแดงจารึกรายนามผู้เสียชีวิต และผู้สละชีพเพื่อชาติจากสงครามต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2483-2497 รวมทั้งสิ้น 801 คน
